Clowes Memorial Hall Exhibition by Michael Helsley

I’m excited to have the opportunity to display my work, and in particular my mobiles, in this space.  The flat concrete surfaces provide an interesting background to contrast my work.  The building is strong and stark, full of beautiful open spaces.  My work is playful and against this backdrop and creating snapshots of a moment in time. I’m looking forward to seeing how the pieces, or characters, interact with one another once they are hung.  I’m also eager for how the audience will get to interact with my work.  You can stand directly under it or view it from any of the floors.  The characters in my work all have specific meaning to me.  However, that may be irrelevant for the audience as they get to make up their own minds about meaning. It’s been a fun summer reworking and creating new pieces to interact with the space.

THE WORK I CREATED:

I’m not so much telling a story as I am expressing a moment.  Each time the mobiles move is a new moment and a new way of seeing things.  Life is fluid and unpredictable, even when all of the parts are the same.  My hope for the audience is that they get to see the playfulness of the characters getting to interact with each other and how they change their position in relationship to each other changes with each moment.  What moment will they get to see?  What story or memory will come from that?  What conversation will come from that moment?

WORK GOING UP ON 9/1/19:

Floating – Time stands still.  The world continues around you.  The Astronaut floats, but he’s a survivor.  This is a chance for contemplation.  It’s ok to just hang out with memory.  Grief is complex, don’t pretend it’s easy.

Falling – Grief can be incredibly isolating – you feel as though you are falling through space and time.  That’s ok.  The Astronaut is an explorer, he will work through the obstacles (The Rocks) as he gazes into The Campfire.  A chance for contemplation.  It’s ok to just hang out with memory.  Grief is complex, don’t pretend it’s easy.

Comfort 1 – What memories comfort you?  Consider the simplicity of a warm cheesy Grilled Cheese.   On a cold day.  Made by someone who loves you.  The Bear considers finding comfort, but he’s also aware of the obstacles – The Rocks.  Grief is a tricky thing – how will you find comfort?

Comfort 2 – What memories comfort you?  The Sundae, with a cherry on top, on a hot summer day with friends and family.  Laughter.  The Bear considers finding comfort, but he’s also aware of the obstacles – The Rocks.  Grief is a tricky thing – how will you find comfort?
